Garden sculptures at Chelsea flower show and Blenheim June 15, 2016

One of the things that informs my work is the relationship between wildlife and its natural habitat. This is why my pieces work so well as garden sculptures. So exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is a real highlight in my year! Planned months in advance, it takes 800 people 33 days to put together the show! They build a spectacular event that attracts more than 165,000 visitors to see 500 exhibitors. I was lucky enough to be right opposite Cleve West’s M & G Garden which won a gold medal. Of course we also saw all the Royal Family.

The design of my own stand showed off my work as garden sculptures. It was created and installed by the Rachael White Designs and Z. Laszlo Landscaping. In addition, there was a stunning trompe l’oeil by Susannah Lampard. This beautiful hand-painted backdrop brought depth and drama to the stand. Working to my brief, she created a natural woodland setting for my Roe Deer.

Susannah also incorporated my sculptural journey through Europe, Africa and India. She created a mini savanna for my family of Elephants and set off my Bull’s Head and Robin with an olive grove. I was particularly happy with the appreciative response to my  Vessel Amphora 2015 and curvy Vessel Inflection Point 2015. They looked so striking in my Chelsea garden.

I would like to say a HUGE thank you to Rachel and the build team who made Chelsea such fun. And we won four stars! I sold several key sculptures and garnered lots of interest for my forthcoming solo exhibition ‘Life in Bronze’ at the Mall Galleries this October. You can see a great video of my stand at Chelsea Flower Show on our Instagram page.

Some of the Roe Deer have found a new home in a private woodland and one of my vessels – Vessel Amphora 2015 – has been suitably placed in a formal garden. I love seeing my work in an outdoor space as garden sculptures. I like that people might happen upon it accidentally in the landscape, looking like it has always been there. Bronze is the perfect material for this. Its robust nature makes it ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. And it is deeply tactile and encourages the viewer to engage with the work. Bronze adapts to a host of different surroundings through its subtly reflective surface.

My Andalusian Stallion is on a tour of the Stately Homes of England and has recently been relocated from Chatsworth to Blenheim Palace by kind permission of the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough. He looks quite magnificent in their formal gardens. It feels very natural to have the work in a place that plays host to so many important horse events. How wonderful to know that so many people will see it over the summer months.
