“Camels are great characters to sculpt. Their faces are very expressive, their bodies lean and muscular.” (HM)

Like all Hamish’s wildlife sculptures, his bronze Camel sculptures were observed from life and created with a close understanding of the animal’s anatomy and form. Part of the appeal of Hamish Mackie’s sculptures is that the artist captures the real physicality of his subjects. He imbues a foundation of anatomical correctness with a character and energy which bring his sculptures to life.

Hamish’s arresting bronze life size Camel sculpture makes quite an impact. It is easy to see why they are called the ships of the desert. Hamish’s understanding of the animal’s anatomy is particularly evident in this large, life size sculpture and is defined and emphasised by the textural quality of this piece. It would make a spectacular focal point to any outdoor space. Available in a limited edition of 9.

I sculpted Camel Sitting and Camel Standing directly from life on a research trip in the U.A.E. to get the subject’s attitude and disposition into my head. My emotive understanding of the subject is fundamental to capturing its character. Having made the maquettes, and the subject is ‘in my head’, it is then easier to sculpt a life size sculpture in my studio without having to refer to anywhere else. The making of these camel sculptures made the front page of The National newspaper, U.A.E. in an article written by Thamer Al Subaihi (17 June 2013)
