Grouse Flying - 2016 SOLD OUT
Hamish has created a number of Grouse sculptures with the knowledge and enthusiasm of a true countryman. He grew up on a working farm and has spent most of his adult life immersed in the study of wildlife and their natural habitats.
The Red Grouse has a rounded body with broad wings, a short tail and a small head. Hamish has sculpted them with his usual anatomical precision, both in flight and still, but one also gets a sense of animation.
His bronze Grouse Flying sculpture is a dynamic study of this game bird on the wing. Hamish’s textured piece conveys a sense of the bird’s patterned plumage which allows them to blend effectively into their moorland habitat. They have a whirring low flight, interrupted by periods of gliding. Hamish has portrayed the bird with its wings and tail outstretched, displaying its feather structure to great effect. A great gift for lovers of country sports and wildlife.
THIS SCULPTURE IN THE MAKING
Observing grouse in the moors of northern England is such a privilege whether it is as a sculptor, a photographer or from a grouse butt. The grouse shooting season starts on 12 August, "the glorious twelfth", and I am always keeping my fingers crossed for an invite!! Grouse are extraordinarily dynamic in flight, twisting and turning as they go, following the contours of the moor; it is this I wanted to capture in my sculpture.
