Goodman's Fields Horses wins Marsh Award 2016 for Public Sculpture November 22, 2016

Earlier this year, I was thrilled to be shortlisted for the PMSA’s annual Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture and Fountains.

Last week, I went along to a ceremony in London to hear the winners announced. I was absolutely delighted to find out I had won my category! Goodman’s Fields Horses scooped the Excellence in Public Sculptures and Fountains Award. It is presented to a fountain or water feature installed in a public place in the last five years. I share the award with Ustigate Ltd, who worked with me on the project. They created a system of strategically placed water jets that suggest my bronze horses are galloping through water.

Brian Marsh OBE, of the Marsh Christian Trust, read out a citation before presenting the award. This is what he said about my Goodman’s Fields Horses:

“The six incredible bronze horses that Hamish Mackie has created are another reminder that horses once grazed in this area.  I would urge you to go and look at this imaginative collaboration between a developer, artist and fountain engineers. It has created a new landmark for the area. The effect is really successful and there is no other water feature like this in the United Kingdom. “

It was a huge honour to have my work recognised in this way and to celebrate my collaboration with Ustigate Ltd.

It’s been a week of feeling so much gratitude in spades! The Award came hot on the heels of my solo exhibition, Life in Bronze. I am still feeling the glow after its roaring success. The feedback from collectors and visitors has been so warm and appreciative, including this touching note:

Dear Hamish.

Among the sculptures, I felt I was with living animals. As a veterinary surgeon who specialised in anatomy, I picked up on a most accurate depiction of posture in all its subtleties, and on movement. From these followed the correct form of the animal. Out of all this came the dignity of the animal. I was both excited and deeply moved.

Sincerely, Roy A. L. Batt, B.Sc.,B.V.Sc.,MRCVS.,Ph.D.

Thank you to the PMSA and to Roy and everyone who supports my work. Knowing that it moves people is truly humbling, and furthermore, keeps me doing what I do.
