Hamish Mackie's Ammonite Sculpture in Horatio's Garden, Stoke Mandeville February 26, 2022

In February, I was delighted to visit Horatio’s Garden Stoke Mandeville, to install my Ammonite Jurassic Cracked sculpture. Horatio’s Garden is a national charity creating and nurturing beautiful, accessible gardens in NHS spinal injury centres for people affected by spinal injury. The garden at the National Spinal Injuries Centre in Stoke Mandeville Hospital was designed by RHS Chelsea Gold Medal winner, Joe Swift. His thoughtful design has given patients and their loved ones a fully accessible oasis to retreat to, a place of natural beauty and repose.

The weather was chilly on the day of the installation, but I was really pleased to meet Head Gardener Amy Moffett and chat about Horatio’s Garden and the wonderful work they are doing. I told her about making the Ammonite sculpture and the inspiration behind it. Humanity has always had a fascination with the past, and I wanted to create a contemporary sculpture that simultaneously conveyed a sense of the timeless beauty of these fossils.

The Ammonite sculpture on its plinth looks perfectly at home there and blends well with the planting scheme and the other natural materials in the space. It feels like a good fit with the garden and when the spring flowers come out, it will make a really striking feature.

It is a real privilege to lend the sculpture to Horatio’s Garden and I hope patients and volunteers will enjoy it.
