Hares remain one of Hamish’s signature subjects which he regularly returns to. This is partly to see how his sculpting style has changed over the years, but also because, as he says,”hares just lend themselves so well to sculpture!”

Bronze Hares Monumental is a sculpture bursting with life and energy. Three times life size, it is designed to be silhouetted side on. It makes a stunning focal point as it really holds its ground from a distance.

Happily, brown hare numbers are recovering in line with increased cereal production and modern day farming methods adopting agri-environmental schemes. This sculpture is a majestic tribute to one of our countryside’s most beloved animals.

“Hares have become one of my signature subjects and I felt it was time to make another hare sculpture. In addition, during lockdown, I also wanted the challenge of a large scale sculpture that would look dramatic within a landscape. I am really pleased with how the sculpture has turned out and look forward to seeing the different settings in which the sculpture is placed by clients.” (Hamish Mackie)

Bronze Hares Monumental are being launched at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year. They will then be exhibited at the Hares of Hampshire Art Trail in aid of the Murray Parish Trust, and in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot 2022.

Working from life observing hares in the field, Hamish’s Bronze Hares Monumental has been sculpted using clay. Working with this organic material allows Hamish to leave a wide range of mark making, from dynamically loose gestures to incredibly tight attention to detail. The nature of the material, especially if worked when very wet, often leaves an unrepeatable surface quality. Casting a smooth surface which can be machine finished is one thing, but to cast this kind of texture requires the highest level of expertise and quality of bronze casting.
