Ostriches have always brought a smile to my face. They are funny, quirky, gloriously odd and mad-looking creatures, full of character and surprisingly unexpected elegance.
For this sculpture, I wanted to capture the lightness and airiness of their dramatic wing feathers. To achieve this, I took an unconventional approach, using a mixture of cardboard and plasticine, all held together with PVA and a large number of glue sticks. It was, to say the least, a departure from my usual traditional sculpting method!
The result is a contemporary piece that feels both light and expressive, while staying true to the unmistakable personality of the ostrich.
This sculpture was inspired by encountering a group of ostriches in the Serengeti, Tanzania, during a safari with Nomad — a moment that perfectly captured their curious, comical presence.
