In early 2025, I was approached by architect and interior designers Michalis Boyd, who are based in London and New York. They asked if I could create a sculptural table centrepiece for the relaunch of Penhaligon’s global flagship stores. Penhaligon’s are perfumers to the King under the Puig umbrella.

The initial commission called for a rectangular bronze Lion Table to display fragrance. Delighted with the outcome, Penhaligon’s soon commissioned a circular Lioness Table as a matching pair.

I have studied lion intensively in Africa, and plien air sculpting from life played a vital role for me to understand what lion are about. In March 2025, I travelled to Tanzania to study lion in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater alongside our brilliant Nomad guide Joel. Observing lions in their natural environment remains key to my sculptural process, as I need to understand their movement, anatomy, and what they are about. This research built on earlier studies undertaken in Kenya for my life size lion sculptures completed in 2019. I spent two wonderful weeks in the bush sculpting lion from the back of landrover.

The original Penhaligon’s Lion Table was enthusiastically received, leading to the development of a broader collection. Among these works is this Lioness Table, conceived as a circular counterpart that introduces a different energy to the series. Where the lion expresses authority, the lioness embodies balance, cohesion, and quiet strength. Her round tabletop reinforces this sense of continuity, creating a softer yet equally powerful sculptural presence.

Also in the collection is a smaller 40cm Lion Display Table, and a limited edition scaled down bronze Lion. Together, all these works sit at the intersection of sculpture, furniture, and design. Although conceived for a global luxury house, they are rooted in traditional making and intended to endure as highly collectable objects.
