Swift Swooping - 2019
Swifts have a well-deserved reputation for being incredible fliers. A migratory bird, they cover huge distances every year of around 200,000 km. They even sleep and mate on the wing, remaining in the air for many months at a time. Swifts are monogamous and visit the UK in the summer to breed and then winter in Africa. They have long scythe-shaped wings and a short, forked tail.
Hamish has created a series of swift sculptures - Swift Soaring 2019, Swift Swooping 2019, Swifts Silver 2019 and Swifts Bronze 2019 - which convey a sense of this bird's extraordinary mastery of the air, evoking rising thermals and high speed flights paths. Any one of these sculptures would make a wonderful gift, especially for a wedding or silver wedding anniversary.
THIS SCULPTURE IN THE MAKING
When I think of Swifts I think of blue skies and summer. A great subject to be sculpting during the grey winter months! Swifts are aeronautical masters of speed and precision flying and have even inspired the design of various aircraft. This streamlined sculpture is about as tight as I go with texture. I wanted to convey a sense of thermals and high speed flights paths.
