In 2019, I spent a very happy two weeks researching lion in the Lewa-Borana landscape in Kenya with the Big Cat monitoring team. There’s a rocky outcrop at Borana which was actually the inspiration for Pride Rock in Disney’s ‘The Lion King’! This research was initially for two life size lion I later made in my studio.

For one reason or the other, the lioness’s head is one of the strongest and most depicted subjects of the animal kingdom. My Lioness Head 2023 has been sculpted out of HS2 clay dug up near the foundry that casts my sculptures into bronze. After being processed through my pug mill, stones and all, it has a lovely organic texture. I have kept it very soft in order to build up the surface in layers, starting wet and loose, and then quite tight in the final details both in handling and surface quality. Worked with a mixture of mostly homemade tools and my hands, this sculpture has a lovely rich surface.

    Making Lion Sculptures at Lewa

    In February this year, I returned to what feels like my second home, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya. It is here that my sculpting began in 1996, so it is a very special place for me. Lewa's founders, the conservationists Ian and Jane Craig, are great friends and have been enormously supportive of my work over the years.

    Northern Rangelands Trust, Kenya

    I have just returned from another visit to the Northern Rangelands Trust in Kenya. As a sculptor, studying wildlife in its natural habitat is the only way to understand an animal. The NRT's work is making a real difference to preserving those habitats. And this has a favourable impact on the people and animals that live there too.
