Hamish Mackie is best known for his bronze wildlife sculptures, painstakingly researched and often sculpted in the field from life. However, as an artist, Hamish is sometimes moved by an inspiration from within.

“Every so often I feel the urge to create a sculpture solely from my imagination. Bird Form is a stylized sculpture. I made them in bronze and then later decided to ask a friend to gold leaf them. I think the effect of the gold leafing evokes an Egyptian or even 1920s vibe.” (HM)

This incredibly tactile bird sculpture manages to suggest in its fluid shape, a totemic grace and a timeless elegance. Hamish has deftly captured the essence of ‘Bird’ in his stylised representation.

In this sculpture I wanted to explore the link between modern and ancient sculpture. It is loosely based on a falcon bird. It is made in bronze and then gold leafed.
