With a name like Hamish Mackie, Highland cows have to be one of my favourite subjects. I just love they way they use their horns to reach the parts other things can’t. Compositionally this makes for two interesting sculptures in bronze – Highland Bull Cheek Itch 2008 and Highland Bull Foot Scratch 2008.
According to the Highland cattle society, they are one of oldest registered breeds of cow in the world and recognised globally. Incredibly hardy and surprisingly good swimmers, their browsing habits also make Highlands the first choice for conservation grazing.
