On about my third trip to Africa, I witnessed a lioness catch and kill a young zebra, not more than 30 yards from my vehicle. This was one of my first experiences of the raw power of the natural world and actually left me shaking with adrenalin.

I have since sent many happy hours studying lion at Borana, with the Lewa lion monitoring team in Northern Kenya.

With my 2023 lion sculptures, I set out to have a lioness in the process of stalking a warthog, and then the final chase. I wanted to capture the intent and muscular bulk of these big cats, in a pose with shoulders and hips opposing each other.

Making Lion Sculptures at Lewa

In February this year, I returned to what feels like my second home, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya. It is here that my sculpting began in 1996, so it is a very special place for me.
