The human figure has been the subject of art since prehistoric times.  This sculpture was inspired by the Winged Victory of Samothrace in the Louvre. Hamish’s nude study ‘Rebellion’ shares a similar proud deific stance with billowing drapery.

Hamish has created a series of 7 nude studies from the same life model. Though perhaps a departure from his usual subject matter, Hamish approached these sculptures in the same way as his wildlife pieces – observation through life. Like all his work, ‘Rebellion’ is anatomically precise and exudes a dynamic quality, the very spirit of life.

Just before the 2020 Covid 19 lockdown, I spent several weeks sculpting from a life model. I started the project by coming up with a series of stances in my head. I then spent a day photographing model Ella Rose, exploring ideas and taking anatomical references. A life model has the advantage of being able to study a static subject in the round. I wanted to push my capabilities, hence 7 very different compositions and sizes, including my first relief panel. Working with a life model has to be a collaboration. Modelling is tough on the body – it’s much harder to stand still than one would imagine!
