‘Rebellion’ Nude Study - 2020
The human figure has been the subject of art since prehistoric times. This sculpture was inspired by the Winged Victory of Samothrace in the Louvre. Hamish's nude study 'Rebellion' shares a similar proud deific stance with billowing drapery.
Hamish has created a series of 7 nude studies from the same life model. Though perhaps a departure from his usual subject matter, Hamish approached these sculptures in the same way as his wildlife pieces - observation through life. Like all his work, 'Rebellion' is anatomically precise and exudes a dynamic quality, the very spirit of life.

THIS SCULPTURE IN THE MAKING
Just before the 2020 Covid 19 lockdown, I spent several weeks sculpting from a life model. I started the project by coming up with a series of stances in my head. I then spent a day photographing model Ella Rose, exploring ideas and taking anatomical references. A life model has the advantage of being able to study a static subject in the round. I wanted to push my capabilities, hence 7 very different compositions and sizes, including my first relief panel. Working with a life model has to be a collaboration. Modelling is tough on the body – it’s much harder to stand still than one would imagine!
