The human figure has been the subject of art since prehistoric times.

Hamish has created a series of 7 bronze nude studies from the same life model. Though perhaps a departure from his usual subject matter, Hamish approached these sculptures in the same way as his wildlife pieces – observation through life.

This sculpture is one of three small bronze nude studies which work well together as companion pieces – ‘Composed’, ‘Abandon’ and ‘Liberty’. Worked quickly and loosely in a sketchy manner, these mantelpiece size sculptures are full of energy and have a wonderful fleshy feel about them. Like all Hamish’s work, ‘Abandon’ is anatomically precise but exudes a fluid dynamic quality. He has captured the balanced movements of the female form in a moment of time, to communicate the joyful spirit of life.

Just before the 2020 Covid 19 lockdown, I spent several weeks sculpting from a life model. I started the project by coming up with a series of stances in my head. I then spent a day photographing model Ella Rose, exploring ideas and taking anatomical references. A life model has the advantage of being able to study a static subject in the round. I wanted to push my capabilities, hence 7 very different compositions and sizes, including my first relief panel. Working with a life model has to be a collaboration. Modelling is tough on the body – it’s much harder to stand still than one would imagine!
