It is believed that sculpting is one of the oldest forms of art - the Venus of Willendorf is more than 30,000 years old and the Venus of Hohle Fels even older, at around 40,000 years old. Both are studies of the female form which continues to inspire artists all over the world.

Life drawing is currently enjoying a justified revival. Working with model Ella Rose, Hamish has made a series of different sculptures, including this bronze Torso Life Size 2020. A celebration of the female form, Hamish has achieved a sculpture that suggests a gentle fleshiness while maintaining a dynamic energy. It is suitable for an internal or external location.

Working with a life model has the advantage of being able to study a static subject in a posed position from all angles. This gives me the chance to measure, photograph and work out the anatomy - what is hard and what is soft - in the controlled environment of a studio. A very different approach to sculpting black rhino en plein air from the back of a Landrover! I enjoyed working in a much tighter style than usual.
