This life-size Highland red stag is my sculptural interpretation of Landseer’s celebrated The Monarch of the Glen, one of the most iconic images in Scottish art and now in the Scottish National Gallery. Inspired by many weeks spent on the hill observing and stalking these magnificent animals, this sculpture seeks to capture not only the physical grandeur of a mature red stag, but also the atmosphere and emotion of encountering one in the wild.

Depicted in late September, he stands in his prime, surveying the territory he will soon defend as the rut approaches. A moment of stillness, his body at peak condition, and his posture conveys the quiet confidence of an animal that reigns over a vast and ancient landscape. There is a sense of anticipation in the piece—a moment of stillness before the first frosts of autumn herald the drama of the rut.

While Landseer’s painting has shaped our collective image of the Highland stag for generations, this sculpture is rooted in direct experience of the Scottish hills. It is a celebration of one of Britain’s most magnificent wild animals and of the rugged landscapes that continue to define its character. Thank you to the stalkers and ghillies who helped me research these wonderful beasts.
