Quick and graceful, the Roe Deer lives in woodland and is mostly active at dawn and dusk. Small and shy, Roe Deer are not as sociable as other breeds, living in small groups. They are elegant nimble creatures, and when alarmed, will flee with a bounding gait.

Hamish created Roe Buck Standing 2019 and Roe Doe Standing 2019 at the same time to complement each other. The sculptures show a pair of Roe deer in a characteristic pose, standing alert on the point of flight. Hamish enjoys making a ‘static’ pose feel alive with tension.

Along with Roe Buck Lying Down 2019, this trio of sculptures would look naturally at home in a country garden or woodland. While all three sculptures are scaled perfectly to work together as companion pieces, they are also available individually and would make a great gift for collectors of British wildlife sculptures.

I often see Roe deer in the countryside where I live and sometimes they venture into our garden. I’ve sculpted Roe deer several times before but I’m still drawn to these shy animals. In these new Roe deer sculptures, I wanted to convey a sense of tension. Although the deer are sculpted in static poses, they are alert and wary.
