Despite their impressively threatening horns, the Longhorn is a breed known for its docility and friendly character. Originally from the north of England, it was predominantly used as a draught animal, and its fat-rich milk was valuable in butter and cheese production. Those splendid horns were prized by makers of buttons, lamps, cutlery and cups.

By the 1960’s the breed was becoming rare, but it was rescued by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust in 1980 and numbers have thankfully increased substantially since then.

Hamish’s Longhorn Bull Head shows the characteristic sweeping horns that curve down to the animal’s nose, and the gentle amiable face. It is easy to see why the Longhorn is held in such affection by famers and country folk alike. This bronze sculpture would make a dramatic impact in an outdoor space, or equally would be a great talking point in an indoor setting.

I’ve always had a passion for sculpting cattle, having grown up on a livestock farm. This Longhorn Bull Head was commissioned by a Cornish friend as a present for his father – they have supported my sculpting since I started. So while my family were on a bucket and spade holiday on the Cornish north coast, I spent most of the time in a shed with a lovely old Longhorn Bull. Working on your own, from life, with such an animal is without doubt the best way forward. Although it took quite a lot of bribery with raisins and silage to get him to model in the right direction!

    Cattle Sculptures by Hamish Mackie

    Last year when I was in the Dordogne, I took the opportunity to visit the incredible cave paintings at Lascaux near Montignac. I was blown away by these prehistoric depictions of wildlife - 17,000 years old. Man has been recording the animals around him since time began and I felt so gratified to be continuing in this tradition.
