On my second visit to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in 1997, the Craig family played a pivotal role in nurturing my passion for sculpting. With a borrowed vehicle, and still wet behind the ears, I ventured into the African bush in search of a bull elephant—only to be mock-charged by the very same elephant four days later. Standing 11 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing nearly 7 tonnes, the presence of such animals never fails to leave me in awe.

That unforgettable encounter with a resident bull named George not only deepened my passion for elephants but also instilled in me a profound respect for these magnificent creatures. To this day, they remain among my favourite subjects to study and sculpt. Observing their behaviour in the wild allows me to better understand who they are. I love getting into my subjects’ heads.

This sculpture captures a powerful, mature bull elephant in a relaxed state, walking with the characteristic, slightly nodding gait I witnessed in the Ngorongoro Crater while staying at Nomad’s Entamanu Lodge. He is one of three elephant sculptures created in 2025—the others being a cow with her calf and an adolescent.

Bull Elephant is made as a stand alone sculpture or to go along side Adolescent Elephant 2025 and Elephant Cow and Calf 2025 all made to scale with each other.
