Hamish’s affection for elephants is apparent in his sensitively realised bronze elephant sculpture. Hamish is always mindful of the vulnerable status of elephants and the threat to population numbers, having a long association with the conservation organisation Tusk and the Lewa Conservancy in Kenya. His bronze sculptures of elephants are particularly appealing, sculpted with a comprehensive understanding of their anatomy, behaviour and character from years of observation and field study.

Fighting elephant bulls sculpture in the making

Elephant, along with other African animals are a subject close to my heart. After school I travelled in Africa and by chance ended up at Lewa Conservancy in Kenya, observing all the wildlife in their natural habitat. It was, at Lewa, that I first decided to make sculpting my career. Watching elephants, in musk, fighting each other is an extraordinarily exciting sight and one that I was lucky to witness. This sight was one that just needed to be sculpted, so armed with my research material I sculpted these bronze Elephant Bulls Fighting in my studio.
