Growing up on the Cornish coast, some of my happiest memories were spent exploring rock pools and scrambling over seaweed-covered rocks in search of crabs. The Cornish coast gave me a lifelong interest in the sea and its wildlife, which continues to inspire many of my sculptures.
This sculpture is a life cast of a large edible crab (Cancer pagurus) supplied by local fisherman Tonks, who runs Cadgwith Cove Crab. The brown crab is one of Britain’s largest native crustaceans and has long been associated with the rocky shores and fishing communities of Cornwall. Working directly from life allowed me to capture every detail of its armour-like shell, worn claws and intricate legs before casting it into bronze.
The sculpture has been cast by Lockbund Foundry using the ancient lost-wax process. Their craftsmanship has faithfully reproduced the fine textures and delicate details of the original life cast, something that is exceptionally difficult to achieve in bronze.
For me, this sculpture is a reminder of those carefree days spent crabbing around the Cornish coast. I hope it brings back similar memories for others who have enjoyed time by the sea.
