Hare - 2019
"I have sculpted hares over the years, as a benchmark to see how my style is changing." (HM)
Beloved of children’s stories and Aesop’s Fables, the Hare is a creature long celebrated in literature, art and folklore. It is a recurring theme in Hamish Mackie’s work, the Hare being one of his favourite animals. Each time he returns to the subject, he creates a Hare sculpture with a fresh eye.
Hare 2019 is a limited edition bronze sculpture of a hare running at full tilt, turning rapidly. This dynamic sculpture resonates with fierce energy. Hamish has chosen a composition that really conveys a sense of centrifugal force, as the hare turns at speeds up to 45mph. This is further emphasised by Hamish's trademark loose and gestural mark making. His finger prints and push marks are clearly visible, imbuing the surface of his material with energy.
Hamish's bronze hare sculpture works equally well as a dramatic indoor piece, or as a witty focal point in a country garden.
THIS SCULPTURE IN THE MAKING
I consider hares to be one of my signature subjects although that contradicts my desire not to be pigeon-holed as an artist! It is always inspirational to see them when spending time outside. For me, hares are a perfect size for sculpting. Large enough to enable me to be free with sculptural gestures and not so huge they become prohibitively expensive.
