As the name suggest, the Hereford was originally from Herefordshire in the UK. With their white faces and red coats, they are one of the oldest native breeds in the country dating back to the 1700s. There are now over 5 million Hereford cattle which have been exported across 50 countries, making it one of the most popular beef breeds.

They are prized for their ability to thrive in a wide variety of environmental conditions and their excellent meat quality. They have a placid temperament and, importantly for the farmer, good fertility.

Herefords have long been the subject of the artist. Hamish is fond of them and has sculpted many over the years. Hereford Bull Head 2019 is typical of the breed, with its characteristic white face, wide nose and curly hair on its broad forehead. It is available in a Limited Edition of 12.

The pedigree bull I studied belonged to Firbosa Herefords on a farm local to me in the Cotswolds. The bull was a lovely calm chap except on the day I decided to park my van in his fields. He took one look at his reflection in the side panels and decided one bull was enough and remodelled my van! A quick exit and out to continue sculpting behind a closed gate!
