“I had seen Humpback whales on television and in books, but it was only on my trip to Antarctica with Ice Tracks in 2011 that I saw them in real life. Sculpturally they presented a real challenge as I wanted to express the enormity of them and the drama of seeing them rising from the water and breaching. It is a magnificent sight and one that I hope I have captured” (HM)

Nobody knows exactly why whales breach, but watching Humpbacks leaping out of the water is spectacular to witness. Hamish Mackie’s whale sculpture Humpback Mother and Calf Breaching is a limited edition bronze rendering of this remarkable natural phenomenon.

In 2011, I was invited by Ice Tracks to be ‘artist on board’ a boat to Antarctica. On our way from Ushualao to the Falkland Islands, we were lucky enough to see Humpback wales breaching; a powerful and vivid image that I wanted to sculpt. In this sculpture I wanted to express the enormity of the whales and the drama and magnificence of them breaching.
