Walking down by the river, you might see a kingfisher as it darts low across the water – an unmistakable jewel-bright flash of turquoise and orange. These beautiful small solitary birds frequent still or slow-flowing water, nesting in burrows on the riverbank and diving beneath the surface to fish.

Hamish’s Kingfisher sculpture perches atop a smooth swooping base, reminiscent of the bird’s flight movement – and indeed the shape of its wing – which contrasts with the texture of the bird’s feathers. The height, and suggestion of movement, brings a modern dynamic quality to this piece.

Kingfisher 2017 was originally commissioned by a husband as a surprise gift for his wife’s 40th birthday – they live beside a river and the visiting kingfishers are a familiar and cherished part of the landscape around their home.

The sculpture is available in bronze or silver and looks especially effective when displayed as a pair, perhaps either side of a candelabra, or as a centrepiece on a dining table to set off complementary tableware. It would make a great gift for a keen fisherman. The silver kingfisher is 92.5% hallmarked Sterling Silver.

Getting a mass of solid metal to look airborne is always a challenge – whether it is a leaping gazelle or a bird in flight. I decided to incorporate a swooping base which mirrors the sculptural form of the kingfisher’s wing shape. It also echoes the dynamic trajectory of the kingfisher’s movement as it strikes the water with conviction and pin point accuracy, darting in an elegant, graceful arc along the river bank. The smooth curve also has a Nordic feel, like the prow of a long boat, and contrasts with the more textured feathers of the bird.
