The little owl, Athene noctua, was introduced to the UK in the 19th century. It is found widely across Europe, Asia and North Africa and has been depicted in art since the late Stone Age. As its Latin name suggests, it is particularly associated with Athena, the Greek goddess of the night.

It can often be spotted during the day, sunbathing on a fence post or tree branch in rural areas, particularly lowland farmland. It is a small plump grey-brown bird with a flat-topped head and white ‘eyebrows’ that give it a permanent frowning expression.

Hamish’s little owl sculpture shows the bird in dynamic silent flight. Its long outstretched wings show the owl’s cryptic markings and feather patterns to great effect.

This sculpture is suitable for placing inside or out, and the Kilkenny stone base can be un-screwed if installing outside.

I wanted to sculpt the owl in flight, a position that enabled me to really show the owl’s amazing feather pattern. I sculpted the the original out of plasticine over an aluminium wing.
