Merino sheep are much prized for their soft fine wool and when Hamish was in Australia he was able to study them on sheep farms in the outback.

“In 1788, 28 Merino sheep formed the farming backbone of Australia. By 1830, there were over 2 million sheep. Now there are more than 35 million. Thank you to the North Ashrose Stud in South Australia for getting me close to those incredibly sculptural horns.” (HM)

Hamish’s Merino Ram sculpture presents all the characteristics that this breed of sheep is valued for. The thick fleece is dense and finely crimped, the magnificent spiral horns curl close to the head. Merino Ram sculpture is available in limited edition in bronze or silver. This is the silver sculpture.

This Merino Ram is a limited edition silver version of my bronze Merino Ram 2015. I decided to cast it in silver as a tribute to the ram, and because the silver casting gives the sculpture a unique rich textural quality that differs from the bronze.
