Merino sheep are much prized for their soft fine wool and when Hamish was in Australia he was able to study them on sheep farms in the outback.

A hardy, resilient breed, they originated in Spain and were imported to Australia where they now thrive in large numbers. Their thick fleece is dense and finely crimped, a valuable commodity used to make quality fashion, sportswear and textiles.

In his bronze Merino Ram Head sculpture Hamish has focused on capturing the detail of this breed’s handsome head and impressive curled horns. There is a sculptural quality to the spiral horns which grow close to the animal’s head, the ridges and markings adding another element to the highly textured feel of this limited edition sheep sculpture.

Merino Ram Head was sculpted from Plasticine, using my travelling studio box, on a research trip to South Australia in April 2015. Thank you to the North Ashrose Stud for getting me close to those incredibly sculptural horns.
