Deer have always been a passion of mine and are one of the subjects I return to again and again.

This stag was originally sculpted life size in clay, following time spent studying red deer in Scotland at the beginning of the rut when they are in their prime. I wanted to capture that wonderful moment when a stag stands proud and alert, full of confidence surveying his territory but not yet in the thick of the rut. The pose also owes something to Landseer’s Monarch of the Glen, a painting I have always admired.

This smaller version has been made directly from my life size clay original. The original was laser scanned at a very high level of detail and then digitally reduced, capturing even the smallest marks and textures of the clay. It was then 3D printed at the new scale before being moulded and cast in bronze using the traditional lost-wax process.

I particularly like that this process allows all the energy and detail of the life size sculpture to be retained in a much smaller bronze. The full size version might be a little large for a hallway!

In 2007, my purpose-built studio next to my house in Oxfordshire was finished. It was a pivotal moment for me, as finally I had the space and equipment needed to tackle pieces at a large scale, like deer sculptures.

As a sculptor, I am always pleased when my pieces are made available as public art. Sometimes a collector puts one of my pieces on display to a wider audience or I receive a commission for a sculpture for a specific public place. I really enjoy knowing that my work will be appreciated by visitors and passers-by.
