Chicken, Hen Pecking - 2009
“Chickens I find endlessly amusing, and have found myself hypnotised while observing a hen having its afternoon nap. A second chicken, a little more lively, jumped up onto my modelling stand and started pecking the clay original!” (HM)
Informed by his upbringing on a Cornish farm, Hamish’s bronze Chicken sculptures are delightfully full of character. Artfully placed in the garden, they provide a witty detail, particularly when grouped together.
“This group of three captures the humorous characteristics of every day chicken life.” (HM)
The archetypal image of a farmyard chicken busily pecking at the earth, Hamish’s bronze Chicken Hen Pecking sculpture is a charming rendering of such a familiar sight.
THIS SCULPTURE IN THE MAKING
Chicken Hen Pecking was sculpted as a group of three (with the Brahma and Leghorn Cockerels). They are birds that I really enjoyed sculpting, observing and working from live chickens in my studio in Oxfordshire. They were real characters and loved to help by pecking the clay!
