Australian wildlife is varied and unusual. As well as the kangaroo, another well-loved and totemic animal is the koala. The popular appeal of this marsupial is obvious in Hamish’s limited edition bronze Koala sculpture. The squat tailless body, large head, round fluffy ears and wide nose are instantly recognisable, but Hamish also manages to communicate a sense of its slow sleepy nature.

"I could not go to Australia and not sculpt a Koala, my children would never forgive me! We were privileged to see a couple of wild ones in the eucalyptus tree where we were staying. They came back to the same tree a few times and did not seem to be remotely alarmed by our presence." (HM)

THIS SCULPTURE IN THE MAKING

Koala bear in Australia
Koala bear in tree

I could not go to Australia and not sculpt a Koala, my children would never forgive me! They are a wonderful sight to see and we were privileged to see wild ones in the eucalyptus tree where we were staying. They came back to the same eucalyptus tree a few times and didn’t seem to be remotely alarmed by our presence. I sculpted this koala while in Australia, from my travelling studio box, using Plasticine.
