A delightful change of scale after some of his larger than life wildlife sculptures, this small Mole is depicted emerging from the ground. He has a characteristic long snout and large paws so well adapted to digging. Hamish’s Mole sculpture is of course anatomically accurate, but he is also charming. The artist has captured a mild-mannered, shy, short-sighted character, beloved of many childhood tales like The Wind in the Willows.

Hamish Mackie’s Mole sculpture is available in bronze or silver in limited edition. With the mole’s implicit symbolism of moving from the darkness into the light, it would make a thoughtful gift for a christening or new baby, as well as for animal-lovers of all ages.

When I finished the Goodman’s Field horses, I decided to give myself the reverse challenge and created a tiny mole. It was interesting to see how I had developed and what I could achieve at this scale. It was the start of a new body of work in preparation for my 2016 solo show, Life in Bronze at The Mall Galleries, London.
