The octopus is an enigmatic, complex creature and highly adaptable. It can regrow lost arms and change its colour to match its surroundings. People have been fascinated by the octopus for millennia. The ancient Greeks decorated coffins, pottery and ritual ornaments with octopus motifs.
Octopus are known for being extremely intelligent. Scientific studies have proved they are capable of sophisticated learning and problem solving skills. Two thirds of their five hundred million neurons are in their arms, which means they can not only touch but also taste and smell with their tentacles.
Hamish created this sculpture for a client as a wedding anniversary present to go in a private house. This sculpture has also been installed on yachts where it also works particularly well.
Hamish has also made a smaller sculpture Octopus – Titanium 2021.
In 2021, I sculpted a large octopus for a client. Our awareness of these amazingly intelligent creatures was highlighted by the 2020 documentary film ‘My Octopus Teacher’. Swimming in tropical waters was obviously out of the question during lock down, so I worked from a frozen octopus from a fishmonger. It has many hundred suckers which took a while to sculpt over an armature which I could lock in any position to enable 360’ sculpting.
