Sir Winston Churchill – Scaled Down - 2020
Following on from the success of his first portrait of Sir Winston Churchill in 2017, Hamish was commissioned to sculpt another bust of this great British statesman in 2020, as the centre piece for the end of a walkway. This is a scaled down version of the 2020 sculpture.
This bronze bust was sculpted using a course wet crank clay. Hamish's loose gestural style adds a dynamic quality to this portrait which captures the expressive character of the former Prime Minister. It depicts Churchill in reflective state of mind, wearing his signature bow tie and herringbone tweed overcoat.
THIS SCULPTURE IN THE MAKING
I wanted to convey more than just Churchill's likeness. He had such an expressive face! I approached it in the same way as I approach animals subjects, trying to convey his thoughts through his expression. He shouldered the responsibility for leading his country during difficult years but I hope I have also shown in his face the kindness of the man beneath.
